The mother is a child’s primary teacher and the first point of life lessons. The mother is the primary teacher and the father, the primary enforcer.
Proverbs 6:20 My son keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
Every mother should teach her children:
1. To Believe In God: When a child sees what God has done in his/her mother’s life the child is more likely to believe in that God. It is difficult to convince a child about God if the child has not seen through the mother’s own example, what God has done in her life.
2. To Believe In Themselves: Believing is not just telling your children that they are great, but letting them express themselves sensibly and non-sensibly – allowing them to make mistakes and not yelling at them. Self-expression builds self-confidence, let your children express themselves, then speak greatness into them.
3. To Be Tolerant: As a mother it is important to note that you often love your children equally but not in the same manner. I learnt from my mother to appreciate differences and recognize that people are not all the same. Mothers should teach their children to be tolerant and appreciate difference in people.
4. To Forgive: Motherhood can present pain, hurt and many challenges along the way. Mothers are resilient and often have to forgive great transgressions! It is important to teach your child the power of forgiveness, that forgiveness may not change the one who inflicted the pain, but it stops you from being changed into a bitter, negative and untrusting person by the pain. If you are bitten by a snake, who remains with the venom?
5. That Words are Potent: The words of a mother stick in the hearts of children, and they always manifest. A mother teaches her children that words have got power and that the quality of their life shall be determined by the quality of their words. As a mother, it is good evaluate what words your children will remember you for.
6. To Take Responsibility: Taking responsibility by admitting fault when a wrong has been done, is a prime lesson to pass to your children. As a mother you must be the example you want to teach. Start by accepting your own faults and apologize to your children when you have misjudged on a matter concerning them. Let your children see you forgive their father, let forgiveness be the cornerstone of your marriage while taking responsibility for your words and emotions.
7. That Wisdom Is The Most Powerful Weapon To Have: Wisdom is the ability to discern difference and to understand moments. Wisdom can tame any beast and unleash great potential. A mother armed with wisdom can teach her children how to stay ahead and how to maneuver through life with an added advantage which they may not have been naturally born with.
8. To Protect The Family: teach them the value of family, how to prioritize the family unit. Children learn this primarily from seeing their mother protect them.
9. Teach Them To Pray From The Heart: No one understands heart matters like a mother, no one can teach faith matters like a mother and no one can teach a child how to pray genuine, life changing prayers from the heart like a mother. When a man learns how to pray from the heart, it is because he learned it from his mother.
10. Teach Your Children To Lead By Example: It is important for every mother to remember that her children watch her with a critical eye, they watch and absorb everything like a sponge. It is not surprising that children emulate good and/or bad habits of their mothers.
